Ms. Malone's Class

On Thursday we had delicious maple pancakes for breakfast. Then we went to an assembly about recycling. Don't forget to recycle. Then we read some of Buttermilk Hill, and it was fantastic. I love it! Next we went to computer lab, and it was fun. We went to recess and then lunch. After lunch we changed classes for enrichment. Afterwards we did a workbook page for social studies and then planted some seeds in our ecocolumns.

On Friday we took all of our tests. We took some social studies notes and planted some more seeds in our ecocolumns. We put in our isopods, but our crickets were dead. We had a late recess because we took pictures during our regular recess time.

We did Fantastic Five for morning work and then went over it. We went over our math homework and did a sheet with subtracting decimals. We were going to watch Today in History, but it did not have any sound. We went to computer lab and then took some social studies notes. Next we went to recess and then went to lunch. We had a chicken patty. It tasted delicious. We changed classes for enrichment. It was fun! We received our animals for our ecocolumns. We put in our elodea, duckweed, algae, fish, and snails. We had to observe everything and write down our observations. Science was really FUN!

Today we ate a good breakfast. It was a muffn and a yogurt and juice. Then during math we did adding and subtracting decimals. Then we did ELA . We had to do a compound sentences sheet. Then we went to P.E. It was fun. We came back and we started on S.S. Then we wrote our S.S notes. Then we went to recess. It was a lot of fun . Then we came back in and then we went to lunch. We had a good Hotdog and milk and a fruit . We came back from lunch and we studied about ecosystems. We are going to work in a group to make a poster about an ecosystem. That was our great day.

To start the day we did a math worsheet. For breakfast we had breakfast bites and apple jucie to drink. After P.E. we had our Quiz on lesson three in S.S. It was front and back. For lunch we had BBQ sandwiches, grapes, beans, and tater tots. Ms. Malone had some writing conferences to go over some of our papers about our summer. We switched classes for enrichment. In Science we reviewed Unit 1 lessons 1 and 2. We started lesson 3 about the characteristics of ecosystems.

We had share time, and then took our tests. Our first test was math. After the math test we read Buttermilk Hill. Then we took our science quiz and stem test. For activity, we went to the computer lab. When we came back, we took some social studies notes. Then we went to recess and then lunch. For lunch we had chicken patty, mashed potatoes, coleslaw, fruit, cornbread, and milk. We look at some pictures about Washington, D.C. and then it was time to go home. Wha a spectacular day!!!

Today we had pizza bagels for breakfast. We did Fantastic Five #3 for morning work and went over it. We went over our math homework and worked in groups on decimal place value. Ms. Malone read a chapter of Buttermilk Hill and then we updated our class blog. We worked on our writing topic about our summer. For activity we went to guidance, and we had a lot of fun. We took a quiz in social studies and started talking about our Washington, D.C. projects. We had inside recess and then went to lunch. For lunch we had turkey sandwiches which were delicious. We changed classes for enrichment and then read over lesson 2 in science. We learned about biotic and abiotic factors in an ecosystem. Our day was fun today.

This morning we had our super good breakfast. Then our teacher, Ms. Malone, looked at our homework and we went over it. We all got them right. Then we started reading our chapter book Buttermilk Hill by Ruth White. All of us love it, and we think it is the best book ever. Next was social studies, and we had to write notes for chapter 11: The U.S. Today. We had a lot to write. Then we went to recess and then to lunch. It was awesome....mmmmm cheeseburgers! We changed classes for enrichment and then we had science. For science, we reviewed the parts of the cell and then made a cell out of food and then we got to eat it all up. What an awesome day!

Today we had biscuts and jelly with juice,while reading silently in our seats. Then Ms.Malone read us a book out loud. It was a really good book! After that we talked about our Washington D.C trip some more.We went to Compeuter Lab for actvity. S.S. - We have finished up Chapter 10 and learning about the Cold War and the Civil Rights Movement. We will be having our chapter test on Fri. For the next two weeks, we will be reviewing for PASS.

ELA: We have finished reading The Giver. We will be learning about and writing legends. We will be reviewing for PASS.

Math: We are learning about 2D and 3D representations. Next week we'll learn about translations, reflections, and rotations. The next week we'll learn about symmetry and rotational symmetry. We will be reviewing for PASS.

Science: We have finished up Unit 2 and learning about landforms and oceans. We will be having our unit test on Fri. For the next two weeks, we will be reviewing for PASS.

Our fifth grade "Stepping Up" program will be May 28th @ 8:30 A.M. More info. to come about this.

Spring Fling is Sat. April 24th from 9-1.

S.S. - We began Chapter 9 on Monday. Our chapter test will be Friday, March 26.

ELA - We are reading The Giver by Lowis Lowry. We will begin working on points of view. PASS Writing is March 16 and 17.

Math - We are working on elapsed time and next week we will be working on the relationship of Farenheit and Celsius degrees.

Science - We have started a new unit - landforms and oceans. We have learner what process change Earth's surface - weathering, erosion, deposition, earthquakes, landslides, volcanoes, and floods. Also we have learned some parts of the ocean floor - continental shelf, continental slope, mid-ocean ridge, rift zone, ocean trench, and ocean basin. Vocab. test on Friday 3/12

Social Studies: We have started Chapter 8. We are learning about World War II. Chapter 8 test will be Friday, March 5th. If you have any stories that have been passed down from this time, please send me a note. I would love for you to come in and share with the class.

ELA: We finished reading Bud, Not Buddy. Ask your child to tell you about this great book. We will begin reading The Giver, which is a science fiction book. We have been working hard on our writing and grammar. The writing portion of PASS will be March 16th and 17th. Ask your child how they did on the language arts and reading MAP.

Math: We have been learning how to measure to 1/8 of an inch, measure angles with a protractor, and metric conversions. This week we will begin learning how to find the perimeter and area of triangles, rectangles, and parallelograms. Ask your child how they did on the math MAP.

Science: We have been taking observations of our terrariums and aquariums. We are finishing up Unit 1 on ecosystems and will have a unit test on Wed. In class, we are working on an ecosystems project.

We have been very busy. In social studies, we are studying the roaring 20s and the Great Depression. In reading, we have been reading Bud, Not Buddy. This is an excellent book! We have been writing, practicing grammar, and learning about poetry. In math, we are measuring to 1/8 of an inch with a ruler and using protractors to measure angles. In science, we are learning about ecosystems. We made a terrarium and an aquarium with plastic 2 L bottles. For the aquariums, we added rocks, water, elodea, guppies/mosquito fish, and snails. For the terrariums, we added rocks, dirt, seeds, crickets, and pillbugs/roly polys. We have been fun observing them each day! We took the reading MAP on Monday and we all tried really hard! We will be taking the math MAP on Monday, Feb. 8th. We are preparing for the writing PASS which will be in March. That will be here before we know it!!!

After that we went to P.E.When we came in Ms. Malone read us a book called The Willoughby's. Next it was time for enrichment. After enrichment we went to Odessey. When that was over we took our social studies quiz on lesson 2. By the time we finished it was close to lunch time.For lunch we had catfish, and it was good. After lunch we went outside to do five laps. When we got done with our laps we came in and read over our science. While we did that Ms.Malone did graded papers. Later we finished our science group projects. Last we packed up and went home.

When we came in today we sat down and did morning work. After that we had our morning meeting. After that we went to art and Mrs. Abbot wasn't here today. We had a substitute named Ms. Bowers.Then we came back to the room and read The Double Cousins and the Mystery of the Watch. Next it was time for enrichment. Some of the students had to get a H1N1 vaccine. After enrichment we worked on our mini-project about the Industrial Revolution. Before we knew it, lunch time had arrived. We had hamburgers, fries, fruit, and milk. We had indoor recess because of the rain. We did a science experiment about concentration. We used red kool-aid. It was a real 'kool' experiment. Finally it was time to go home. That was the end of our wonderful day in 5th grade.

When we came inside we read lesson 5 in science about solutes and solvents. Then we watched the space shuttle, Atlantis, take off at 2:28 P.M. on NASA TV. Then we packed up and went home.

Greetings from Washington, D.C. We left our school around 12:30 P.M. on Tuesday and arrived in Washington, D.C. around 11:30 P.M. We ate dinner at a Ryan's in Roanoke Rapids, NC. It was delicious. On Wednesday morning we woke up at 6:00 A.M. and went to breakfast at 6:45 A.M. We boarded the bus at 7:45 A.M. and headed into D.C. We went to the Washington Monument to get tickets. From there we walked to the Holocaust Memorial to see "Daniel's Story". It was very sad and touching. After that we walked to the American History Smithsonian. In here we saw Dorothy's red slippers and a huge American flag just to name a few. Next, we walked to the Air and Space Museum. This was a really cool place. We played with lots of science gadgets in a room called "How Things Fly". We saw the Wright Brother's plane, and some cool World War II planes. Some of us rode the Flight Simulators. This was awesome!!! Some of us walked to the Natural History Smithsonian. We saw some dinosaur fossils, some gems, the Hope Diamond, and some ocean animals. We walked back to the Air and Space Museum to catch the bus. We went to eat dinner at the Old Country Buffet. After dinner we went back to our hotel and went swimming! Finally it was bedtime. That was our fabulous first day in our nation's capital.

Today was a great day because we finished reading View from the Cherry Tree. We had many tests today. We went to music and sang "You're a Grand Ol' Flag" and "God Bless America".
